On the occasion of the inaugural 200 Miles, the European Daytona, my father “Checco” Costa asked me to manage the emergency medical facilities at the track for the first time. So on 21 April 1972, along with a talented resuscitation team, I began my mission to help the motorcycle racers, who have become my dearest friends.Over the ensuing forty years we have offered our services countless times, occasionally bringing an injured rider back from the brink by restoring their breath and heart beat. These past four decades, full of highs and lows, are the emotional subject of a book I began writing before Marco Simoncelli passed away. After Marco’s death I picked up my pen once more to finish the book, which I have dedicated to him, entitled “Marco’s Victory”.
“Marco’s Victory”, as already announced last winter, is actually two books in one. It contains two very closely linked volumes. The first, entitled The Dream of the Dinosaur, is a book full of memories and experiences, where the legend of ancient man can be glimpsed in the feats of our heroes; the legend which promises hope, where danger leaves no way out and no road to salvation. The gods in this first part of the book are the heroes who have gambled with destiny in their lives: Mick Doohan, Loris Capirossi, Wayne Rainey, Alex Zanardi, Shoya Tomizawa, Marco Pantani and Marco Simoncelli.
The second part, Marco’s Victory, explains how Champion Marco Simoncelli was triumphant in Malaysia, despite his death on the track. The victory belonged to his smile, his family and the immortal youth of the soul, refusing to hand itself over to the frozen clutches of Death...
Marco’s secret Victory is a gift for everyone: for the people who loved him and still do, the people who realised they loved him the day he died, and even those who will fall in love with him as they read this book, which is dedicated to him with endless love: “To Marco Simoncelli, alive in our hearts”.
