Tom Belsø contested only two Formula 1 Grand Prix in his career. The Iso Marlboro FW21 from the Swedish GP, which Spark recently released in 1:43, would have been delighted Tom.

Unfortunately, Belsø died on 11 January this year after a long and serious illness. The man from Copenhagen was a mechanic and made his debut as a racing driver on the Roskilde Ring in the sixties. In 1972 he was the first Dane to complete the European Formula 2 Championship. At that time he shared the 17th final place with no less a person than James Hunt. Instead of Formula 1, Belsø then switched to Formula 5000, and even then he could count on the support of cigarette manufacturer Marlboro.

When Frank Williams had a free cockpit for the 1973 Swedish GP, it was Belsø who stepped in. But only during practice. Williams and Marlboro had the impression after a few practice laps that it was still too early for a change. Belsø's F1 debut in Frank Williams' ISO team did not come about until 1974 in South Africa. And it was not crowned with success. After a few metres the clutch collapsed.

Like today, Williams was at the end oft he grid in Formula 1, and Belsø later expressed the suspicion that Frank Williams had deliberately adjusted the clutch so that it broke – a) to save the car and b) to collect the entry fee anyway. At the GP of Spain the man with the blond hair didn’t qualify. But later that year he became eighth at his «home GP» in Sweden.

Also at the British Grand Prix qualifying marked the end oft he weekend. Again Belsø had the feeling that something could be wrong with the car. And so his F1 career ended after only two races. Belsø switched back to F5000 and in 1977 founded a company specialising in cereals.

Years later, he told a Danish journalist colleague: «I realised early on in my career as a racing driver how important nutrition is. That's why I specialized in muesli. After spending a lot of money on racing for years, it was time for some of it to come back.» And some of it came back. «Belsø Cereals» became a big seller in Denmark, and the «inventor» a wealthy man.

In 2005 the busy businessman sold his company and retired. In racing driver circles he went down in history as the first Dane in Formula 1. Belsø thus paved the way for compatriots such as Jan Magnussen (1995-1998 in F1), Nicolas Kiesa (2003) and Kevin Magnussen (2014-today).
