The Cooper T86 first appeared at the British GP in 1967. Narrower and lighter by sixty kilos than its predecessor, the T81, it was powered by the Maserati engine with 3 valves per cylinder glimpsed during practice session at the Monaco GP. The temporary front bonnet, to say the least unsightly, housed a water radiator borrowed from a touring car. Oil leaks on the exhaust forced the Austrian driver to make three pit stops before a large plume of smoke announcing a mechanical breakdown forced him to abandon his car on the edge of the track.
