The 1978 Austrian GP began in light rain, with all competitors on slicks. But the rain intensified right at the start and provoked multiple spins amongst the competitors, on or off the track, including that of the future Brazilian World Champion from the third round. His second Grand Prix was therefore cut very short. The race was stopped on the 7th lap and at the restart Piquet could not take part.
