This was a period of two halves in various ways, not least the dramatic technical leap in 2014 when Formula 1 swapped its 2.4-litre naturally aspirated V8s for the 1.6-litre V6 turbo-hybrid power units still used today. That same year also brought a stark change of fortunes, with the newly dominant Mercedes team displacing previously supreme Red Bull, and Lewis Hamilton ending Sebastian Vettel’s four-year reign by becoming World Champion in five of the decade’s remaining six seasons. As ever, technology moved on apace and the turbo-hybrid cars soon became quicker than their predecessors.
