In 1966, the F1 regulations changed and the engine capacity increased to 3 liters. Denny Hulme was content, for the first race of the season, with a 2.8 liter Coventry Climax. He nevertheless qualified on the third row and occupied fourth place for fourteen laps before his transmission let him down on the next lap.
