After a sabbatical in 1982, the 1980 World Champion Alan Jones took the wheel at the Long Beach GP in 1983. Jackie Oliver, Arrows’ boss, hoped to attract a badly needed sponsor with the arrival of the Australian driver in his team. Not quite recovered from a fall from a horse in the weeks before the race, gaining some weight during his inactivity in the southern hemisphere, Jones qualified midgrid. In the race, he distorted his suspension after flirting too closely with a low wall and retired soon after. Jones did not get back behind the wheel of an F1 car for two years, but that is another story!
