The French Grand Prix took place on 28 June 1998 at the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours and covered a distance of 71 laps of 4.25 km each, giving a total distance of 301.750 km.

Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari F300 started the race from 2nd position. Right at the start he was able to overtake his biggest rival Mika Häkkinen in the McLaren-Mercedes to secure the top position. During the race Schumacher benefited from his team mate Eddie Irvine who was able to leave the two McLaren-Mercedes drivers Häkkinen and Coulthard behind. In the end, Schumacher won the race in a commanding manner ahead of Irvine and Häkkinen and gave Ferrari its first Formula 1 double victory in over 8 years. With his third win of the season so far, he closed the gap on Häkkinen, who was leading in the overall standings.
